Uli Twelker sprach mit Rorys Bruder Donal Gallagher

"Out Of My Mind" ist nicht nur ein Titel der 2. Gallagher Solo-LP "Deuce". Viele Fans fragen sich, ob Rory ohne Tontrager-Präsenz nicht bald aus der Erinnerung verschwindet. Aber die Zeit des Wartens ist vorbei, und der Name Gallagher ist nicht länger in Gefahr, nur mit den flachen Oasis Brothers in Verbindung gebracht zu werden.

Donal Gallagher: Warum so lange nichts rauskam? Zunächst wollte ich aus Rorys Tod kein Kapital schlagen. Dann gab es in England eine unklare Situation mit BMG, und EMI in Amerika waren gelinde gesagt chaotisch. Wir wollten die Situation weltweit klären und nichts bringen, bis einheitliche Relssues möglich würden. Neues Material wollte ich nur in Koordination mit den Staaten und dem Rest der Welt bringen. Aber noch während wir sprechen, bleibt der Wirrwarr - morgen fliege ich nach Los Angeles, ohne dass sich ein EMI-Repräsentant bereit erklärt hatte, mit mir zu sprechen!

Uli: Wo wird denn nun bei uns Rory Gallagher Material erscheinen?

D: BMG übernehmen alles außerhalb der US. Sie haben auch eine Option fur die USA, falls ich die Situation klaren kann.

Uli: Unsere Information ist, daß Deuce, Irish Tour, Calling Card, Photo Finish & Fresh Evidence auf CD kommen. Sind die Bonus-Tracks live oder Studio-Sachen?

D: Diese fünf Alben sind die erste Ladung und die Bonus-Tracks sind im Studio entstanden. Deuce wird 2 unveröffentliche Songs enthalten, Irish Tour erscheint in Originallänge auf einer CD. Auf Calling Card kommt "Loneley Mile", und ich habe noch eine frühe Version von "Public Enemy" von Top Priority mit Keyboards draufgepackt, das ist "B Girl". Auf Photo Finish erscheinen "Rule The Day" und "Bowed Not Broken", auf Fresh Evidence "Never Asked You For Nothing" und "Juke Box Annie".

Uli: Waren dies fertige Tracks? Warum brachte Rory die seinerzeit nicht?

D: Als Rory diese Alben aufnahm war er ein absoluter Vinylmenschl! Und Vinylscheiben limitieren die Minutenzahl auf jeder Seite. Also waren seine Platten auch so strukturiert, für eine A- und B-Seite auf Vinyl. Rory hat natürlich immer mehr aufgenommen, und das bringen wir nun.

Uli: Gab es Schwierigkeiten bei der Identifizierung?

D: Die Tape Boxen besonders aus den 70ern waren nicht sauber beschriftet. Wir mussten beim Hören kombinieren, zu welchem Line-Up die Tracks gehörten. Wenn ich sage, dass "Persuasion" von der Deuce-Periode stammt, ist das nach bestem Wissen.

Uli: Könntest Du nicht die damaligen Toningenieure um Rat fragen?

D: Kaum. Deuce wurde damals von Robin Sylvester gefahren. Ich weiß, daß er an der US-Westküste lebt, konnte ihn aber nicht auf den Radarschirm bekommen, und das Londoner Tangerine Studio existiert nicht mehr. Photo Finish haben wir gegenüber der Originalversion gleich neu abgemischt. Dafür haben wir Colin Fairley genommen.

Uli: Colin hat einen guten Ruf durch seine Arbeit mit Climax .. .

D: ... und er ging bei Geoff Emerick und George Martin in dessen Air Studios in die Lehre! Wäre Rory wieder gesund geworden, hätte er Colin wohl als Produzenten gewählt. Fairley war entscheidend für die Arbeit an Photo Finish, denn er war es, der Rory den damals neuen Drummer Ted McKenna vorschlug!

Uli: Nach der fehlenden CD-Version dieser LP fragen uns viele Leser.

D: Die Lücke hatte einen Grund: Rory liebte das Album, war aber mit dem Mix nie zufrieden und wollte ihn perfektionieren. Deshalb wandte ich mich an Colin, denn der hatte mit Rory noch über dieses Projekt geredet. Ich wollte Tony Arnolds Studios in Dorset: Courthouse Facilities. Tony macht unsere Re-Mixes.

Uli: Du gehst immer sehr treu und verantwortungsvoll mit Rorys Erbe um. Hast Du hei diesen Re-lssues gewagt, mit Overdubs zu arbeiten?

D: Nein. Ich war aber in Versuchung, die Drums auf Deuce neu aufzunehmen. Ich habe die Tracks vielen Leuten vorgespielt, und ein Typ von Polygram Amerika und Ray Janks in London baten mich, nichts an den Drums zu ändern. Es gab keinen Drummer-Fehler, aber wir haben damals mit 8-Track aufgenommen, und nur zwei waren fur die Drums. Dadurch konnte man nichts ändern: eine lautere Snare brachte das ganze Kit nach vorne und zerstörte die Balance! Man konnte nicht justieren, nicht auf links und rechts verteilen. Wir haben jetzt einen tollen Drumsound hingekriegt, mussten aber durch einige Filter und Graphics, um das zu schaffen!

Uli: Wie stand Rory denn zu Lebzeiten zu dieser ganzen Diskussion?

D:Rory war so nicht mit Photo Finish zufrieden, deshalb war es ja ebenfalls nicht als CD herausgekommen. Die Performance ist okay, aber CDs reproduzieren sehr klar - dennoch ließen wir's am Ende so, wie's gemeint war. Eine harte Entscheidung. Man konnte auch mogeln und heimliche Overdubs machen, aber unglücklicherweise ist Wilgar Campbell auch nicht mehr unter uns. Ehrlich gesagt hatten wir Brendan O'Neill und Gery McAvoy genommen - denn wenn man diesen Weg geht, kann man nicht nur die Drums verändern, sondern auch den Bass.

Uli:Und wenn man zusätzliche Re-Mixes auf der 80-Minuten-CD anböte?

D:Kann man machen, aber das wäre wieder unfair gegenüber dem Original Drummer. Am Ende muss man alles so lassen! Wir sind bereits auf der Suche nach Bonus-Tracks für die nächsten 5 Alben.

"Out OF My Mind" is not only a title of the 2. Gallagher solo LP " Deuce ". Many fans ask themselves whether Rory without toning rising up he operational readiness level disappears not soon from the memory. But the time of waiting is past, and the name Gallagher is not longer in danger only with the flat Oasis Brothers in connection to be brought.

Donal Gallagher: Be enough for nothing why in such a way came out? At first I did not want to strike from Rorys death capital. Then there was an unclear situation with BMG in England, and EMI in America were said chaotic gentle. We wanted to ren the situation world-wide&aum;kl and bring nothing, until uniform Relssues became possible. New material I wanted to bring only in co-ordination with the states and the remainder to the world. But still during we speak, remain the confusion - tomorrow I fly to Los Angeles, without a EMI representative had ready explained itself, to speak with me !

Uli: Where now with us will Rory Gallagher material appear?

D: BMG takes over everything outside of the US. They have also an option fur the USA, if I know the situation clear.

Uli: Our information is that Deuce, Irish Tour, Calling Card, Photo Finish & Fresh Evidence come on CD. Are the bonus TRACKS live or studio recordings?

D: These five albums are the first charge and the bonus TRACKS in the studio developed. Deuce will contain 2 unveroeffentliche Songs, appears Irish Tour into original-long on CD. On Calling Card comes "Loneley Mile", and I draufgepackt still another early version of "Public Enemy" from Top Priority with key boards, that am "B Girl". In Photo Finish "Rule The Day" and "Bowed NOT Broken" appear, on Fresh Evidence "Never Asked You For Nothing" and "Juke box Annie".

Uli: This were finished tracks? Why didn't Rory bring those at that time?

D: As Rory was it took up these albums an absolute Vinyl-person! And vinyl limit the minute number on each side. Thus its disks were also in such a way structured, for an A and a B-page on vinyl. Rory took up naturally ever more, and we bring that now.

Uli: Were there difficulties with the identifier?

D: The Tape boxes from the 70ern was not cleanly marked particularly. We had to combine when hearing, to which Line up the tracks belonged. If I legend that "Persuasion" comes from the Deuce period, is after best knowledge.

Uli: Couldn't you ask tone engineers at that time for advice?

D: Hardly. Deuce was driven at that time by Robin Sylvester. I know that he lives at the US west coast, could not get it however on the radar display screen, and the London Tangerine studio does not exist any longer. We again merged Photo Finish more against the original version directly. But we took Colin Fairley.

Uli: Colin has a good reputation by its work with Climax...

D:... and he went with Geoff Emerick and George Martin into its air of studios into the teachings! If Rory would have become again healthy, he would probably have selected Colin as a producer. Fairley was crucial for the work on Photo Finish, because it was it, the Rory the then new drummer Ted McKenna suggested!

Uli: For the missing CD version of this LP many readers ask us.

D: The gap had a reason: Rory loved the album, was however with mixes never contently and wanted it to perfect. Therefore I turned to Colin, because he had talked with Rory still about this project. I wanted Tony Arnolds of studios in Dorset: Courthouse Facilities. Tony makes our Re-Mixes.

Uli: You deal always very faithfully and responsibly with Rorys inheritance. Did you dare hei this Re-Issues to operate with Overdubs?

D: No. I was however in temptation to take up the Drums on Deuce again. I played the tracks many people, and a type of Polygram America and Ray Janks in London asked me to modify nothing in the Drums. There was no Drummer error, but we took up at that time with 8-Track, and only two were for the Drums. Thus one could not modify anything: a louder Snare brought the whole kit forward and destroyed the balance! One could adjust, not distribute not on on the left and on the right. We now got a phantastic Drumsound, had however by some filters and Graphics, in order to create!

Uli: How was Rory to lifetimes to this whole discussion?

D: Rory was so not content with Photo Finish, therefore it had not come out likewise as CD. The performance is okay, but CDs reproduce very clearly - nevertheless it`s left at the end in such a way, as it was meant. A hard decision. One could also make some hidden overdubs, but unfortunately Wilgar Campbell is also not more among us. Honestly said we had taken Brendan O'Neill and Gery McAvoy - if one goes this way, can one not only the Drums change, but also the bass.

Uli: And if one offered additional RH-Mixes on the 80-minute CD?

D:One can make, but that would be again unfair in relation to the original Drummer. At the end one must leave everything in such a way! We already are on the search for bonus TRACKS for the next 5 albums.
